Information about Lowfers

Lowfers are a close knit group of radio experimenters who operate beacons to explore the mysteries of low frequency propagation. Most of these experimenters are also amateur radio operators, however, no license is required. The best source of information on this topic is "The Lowdown", the official publication of the Longwave Club Of America. Their web site is also a great source of information about LF experimentation. Visit them at:
http://www.lwca.org/

There is also an e-mail reflector that many active lowfers subscribe to. The list is used to discuss topics ranging from antenna design, noise blankers, CCW, and BPSK, etc. During the Winter DX season, the list is also used to report openings and pass along reception reports. To subscribe; visit the link below. You'll see a box that says "Select List". The list name is "Lowfer".

These sites are directly related to "Lowfer" operations. You should be aware that there are also amateur radio LF operations (in Europe and elsewhere), experimental licensed stations, and research groups like AMRAD.

QRSS Resources

QRSS (Slow Speed) CW is getting lots of attention from lowfers in the US this season. As an aid to everyone we're adding a selection of links for more information on this mode. Below is a screen capture of Lowfer beacon, TX in Texas. Bill has one of the best signals on the band. This image was taken on December 18, 2000 while Bill was transmitting on 189.100khz. The signal faded in and out for over an hour, yielding lots of screen captures like this one! This beacon is 608 miles away, and was copied using an active tuned whip.

    WOLF Mode Resources

    • WOLF Software The newest weak signal mode shows great promise, and may possibly replace QRSS mode! Download the software and start experimenting now!
    • Messer Software Freeware timed audio recording software, will allow you to capture .wav files overnight at various intervals. Perfect for logging WOLF signals, NDB recordings, or even plain old CW. Just park on a frequency and let your computer do the work.
    • Loop Recorder This application allows you to automate your overnight recording of sound files, which should make it very useful for WOLF loggings. It requires the registered version to perform this task, but the software is only $12.50.
    • NCH Timer Another overnight sound recorder program that should be very useful for WOLF monitoring.
    • Volume Set Very useful utility that allows users to save their mixer settings for various DX activities.
