Looking up at the tophat of 1LF. 1LF is another one of Lyle Koehler's "All in One" QRSS/BPSK beacons. For now, it occupies a temporary home at an adbandonded NDB site in Calera, Alabama. Not nearly as well heard at XMGR, but still a trooper. This beacon has performed well in a hostile environment. As of 01/01/01, beacon 1LF is off the air for repairs, and will likely be moved to a new remote location.

Lowfer beacon 1LF is a temporary beacon currently being used to help evaluate the performance of a decommissioned NDB beacon, AOA in Calera, Alabama. By mapping the groundwave coverage of the Lowfer beacon, we hope to determine the possibility of returning this NDB site to the air. This beacon is currently being operated with the permission of the Shelby County Airport Authority.

The beacon operates 24 hours per day on 187.300Khz, using a large marine battery as it's only power source. A 5 watt solar panel trickle charges this battery during daylight hours. The NDB antenna is legal under Part 15 FCC rules, as the tower is only 40 feet tall with a 8 foot diameter tophat. The ground system consists of 64 radials, each 500 feet long. The beacon also uses the "All in One" CW-BPSK-QRSS transmitter.Currently, the beacon is set up to transmit in QRSS (Slow Speed CW mode) full time. BPSK can be sent on request.

As of 01/01/01, beacon 1LF is off the air for repairs, and will likely be moved to a new remote location.
